During our testing phase of Arnacon, we stumbled upon an intriguing use case: people registering for WhatsApp Business using Israeli landline numbers, even when they’re not based in Israel and don’t intend to use the number for calls.
This approach works because WhatsApp supports registration through phone calls, making landline numbers a practical option for some. It highlights the platform’s flexibility—allowing users to adapt technology in ways that suit their needs, even if it’s unconventional.
That said, there’s a critical detail to keep in mind: maintaining ownership of the number is essential. Based on experiences with similar apps like SecNum, we know that unused numbers are often released back into circulation after a few months. If that happens, the new owner could potentially gain access to the associated WhatsApp account.
This use case sheds light on the creative ways people are leveraging phone numbers today—not for calls, but for digital presence. It’s a fascinating reminder of how dynamic user behavior can be.
We love when the customers teach us how what the product should do.
